, everybody. i'm eric bolling with andrea tantaros, bob beckel, dana perino, and greg gutfeld. it's 5:00 in new york city. this is "the five." ♪ ♪ brand new details in the murder-suicide of n.f.l. star jovan belcher and cassandra perkins. the kansas city star and the "new york post" report that belcher spent the night drinking and partying with a girl named britney glass, at a popular bar district in downtown kansas city. belcher drove miss glass home, dropped her off and passed out in misbentley. 2:50 a.m., cops woke belcher up and told him not to drive. he called glass apt spent the next four hours in her apartment. at 6:45 a.m., he drove the bentley to his home where girlfriend perkins recently arrived with her own night out with friends. argument ensued and belcher shot perkins nine times. belcher's mother and baby were there for the shooting. after killing perkins, belcher kissed the lifeless body, walk toed his mother, kissed his baby girl and left. he drove five miles to the chiefs' practice field after several minutes of pleading with him, they couldn't talk belcher off th

. the question may now be when, not if, the republicans will cave on taxes. joining me now is dana milbank, columnist for "the washington post." he's writing about the republicans waving tax hikes and cynthia tucker and visiting professor of journalism at the university of georgia. thanks to both of you for being here tonight. >> hi, reverend. >> good to be here, reverend. >> dana, are republicans really ready to cave? >> well, reverend, first of all, terrific particular to see you and ann coulter on the same page. they've caved already. they have said, we're going to agree to an $800 billion tax increase. it's entirely possible that they are going to go off the cliff any way. it doesn't mean that a deal is imminent. it basically means that they surrender. they used to say that they wouldn't give a dime of tax increase for spending cuts. now they are saying, let's go and do it if we can get $3 of taxes for spending cuts. >> the choice may be down to, do they make the deal before the deadline or do they let it go over the cliff and then come back and vote the tax cuts for the medical class

be reached. jessica yellen joins us, dana bash and david gergen. what's the latest? >> reporter: they are a long way from a deal, but late today speaker boehner and president obama did speak to one another on the phone. now, this is an important development because it's the first time they've talked in a week about the fiscal cliff. i am told, though, that there was no real progress in negotiations. in this sense there was no breakthrough on that central point of tax rates. as you know, president obama insists there is no deal unless the gop agrees to raise rates on the top 2% of earners. the gop says that's a nonstarter and the two men have not moved from that basic position. now, all of this quomz comes at the same time treasury secretary geithner also said for the first time the administration would be willing to go over the fiscal cliff if the gop does not agree to raise those rates. this was treasury secretary geithner earlier today on cnbc. >> is the administration prepared to go over the fiscal cliff? >> oh, absolutely. there's no prospect to an agreement that doesn't inv

straight to our senior congressional correspondent dana bash. she's watching what's going on. dana, the tax rates, first of all, let's get to a major sticking point right now. there's been a counterproposal from house republicans to the white house. you have details. >> reporter: that's right. let's start exactly where you just began on those tax rates because that has become the big divide between the two sides. the answer is the house republicans are not budging. they still want to continue the bush era tax rates at all income levels. let's get specific. first of all, the counterproposal, they say they would get about $800 billion in savings from what they call tax reform, from deductions and closing loopholes, things like that. but the bush era tax rates, all of them would remain, even for the wealthiest. to show you the difference, compared to the white house offer that they got last week, $1.6 trillion in savings when it comes to tax revenue. but much of that came from raising tax rates for the wealthiest americans, which of course is what president obama campaigned on. so those are th

're now hearing it sounds like from republicans dana bash, our senior congressional correspondent, live for me, right now on capitol hill. what have you learned? >> reporter: that's right, brooke. we have breaking news. the house republicans have sent at this time a letter to the president with what they're calling a bold counterproposal. we'll leave it to others to decide whether or not that is the case. but the speaker himself came in to talk to a group of reporters who were gathered to get some details on this, and the speaker said that he thinks that this is, in his words, a credible offer, one that he hopes the white house takes seriously. and one that the white house responds to quickly. now, what is the offer? we have some specifics so we can give our viewers and i'm sure there are people out there watching this very, very closely, because the fiscal cliff is so close. first of all, they claim that what their plan would do would save $2.2 trillion. the key here, though, is we know that the big divide has been over those bush era tax rates. the white house wanting to extend -- exc

. dana bash on the hill. a standoff here, republicans essentially saying, look, the president is not being reasonable here, and then you have the white house saying this is magic beans and fairy dust. is this a lot of posturing here? are we really at an impasse? >> yes to both of those questions. there is a lot of post urg, but we do seem to be at an impasse. i want to show our viewers some video that will illustrate just what we're talking about. that is pictures of members of the house of representatives leaving for the week, and now, i don't want tower viewers to get concerned. the calendars on the desk tops are not wrong. it is still wednesday. this did happen at noon on wednesday. it would be nice if all of us could do that, but -- >> yeah, really. >> this is not an accident. republican leaders say that they just simply have nothing to vote on right now on the floor of the house, and, you know, it helps them illustrate the whole message that they're sending out, which is that the ball is in the president's court. it is up to him to respond to the republicans at this point
